Homeroom amplifies and celebrates the work of collectives, organizations, artists, and activists that are connected to PS1’s public programming and community allyship initiatives. For Pride Month, PS1 collaborates with Black Trans Liberation and founder Qween Jean to transform Homeroom into a sacred space of affirmations and offerings centering Black, trans, two-spirit, and gender non-conforming people. The space is intended for those who identify as trans to hold sanctuary, and to remember and honor loved ones. For those who identify as allies, this space asks us to learn about, protect, and celebrate Black trans legacies and lives.
At the center of the activation is an altar that serves as an invocation to honor and learn about Black Trans Liberation, an organization that aims to end homelessness within the trans population by providing access and resources. Black Trans Liberation’s goal is to dismantle the current 35-year life expectancy of Black trans people, and abolish systemic oppression. Their altar allows visitors to reflect, remember, learn, and heal. Through the use of portraits, candles, textiles, mirrors, affirmations, and botanicals, Black Trans Liberation creates a community space that fosters engagement, calling on us to imagine and actively forge a world where we are all freed by the liberation of Black trans people.
Throughout the activation, Stonewall Protests will be activating Rashid Johnson’s Stage with song, dance, and protest. The Stonewall Protests is a grassroots collective that has met every week for over a year to educate, participate in healing rituals, and release pain and foster joy within the revolution for abolition and liberation. For the opening of Black Trans Liberation’s Homeroom activation, Black Trans Liberation and Stonewall Protests will be holding space on Stage for remembrance, resistance, and joy on Saturday, June 12 from 2 to 8 p.m.
