For this summer Saturday program on Fistful of Love/También la belleza, join us for a talk by art historian and current MoMA Scholar in Residence C. Ondine Chavoya. Dr. Chavoya will reflect on the social and cultural context of Southern California and Northern Mexico in which Reynaldo Rivera developed his photographic practice at the end of the twentieth century—a time, place, and scene that also formed his own scholarship and approach to contemporary art history. The presentation will be followed by a conversation with Kari Rittenbach, Assistant Curator, MoMA PS1.

C. Ondine Chavoya is the John D. Murchison Regents Professor in Art in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin. A specialist in Chicanx and Latinx art, Chavoya is co-editor of Chicano and Chicana Art: A Critical Anthology (2019). Chavoya’s curatorial projects have addressed issues of collaboration, experimentation, social justice, and archival practices in contemporary art. Previous exhibitions include Michel Auder: Chronicles and Other Scenes (with Lisa Dorin, 2004), Asco: Elite of the Obscure (with Rita Gonzalez, 2011), Robert Rauschenberg: Autobiography (with Lisa Dorin, 2017), Axis Mundo: Queer Networks in Chicano L.A. (with David Evans Frantz, 2017), and Teddy Sandoval and the Butch Gardens School of Art (with David Evans Frantz, 2023).
