Open House

Join us for our Open House to celebrate new exhibitions with talks from artists, authors, and educators. The event marks the opening weekend of three shows: Leslie Martinez: The Fault of Formation, And ever an edge: Studio Museum Artists in Residence 2022–23, and Teen Art Salon. The entire day of conversations, screenings, and activities is free and open to the public.

At 1 p.m., celebrate the publication launch of Rirkrit Tiravanija: A LOT OF PEOPLE, which accompanies the artist’s exhibition at MoMA PS1. Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs Ruba Katrib will join designer Tiffany Malakooti, artist Liam Gillick, and art historian Molly Nesbit to discuss the challenges of archiving Tiravanija’s practice, the role of personal memory in his work, and the publication’s structural use of chronology.

At 2:30 p.m., join an in-person roundtable discussion with the Studio Museum in Harlem’s 2022-23 Artists in Residence Jeffrey Meris, Devin N. Morris, and Charisse Pearlina Weston, moderated by Yelena Keller, Assistant Curator, Studio Museum in Harlem. To mark the opening of And ever an edge: Studio Museum Artists in Residence 2022–23, hear the artists speak about their work created over the course of the residency program. ASL interpretation will be provided.

At 4 p.m., attend a conversation between artist Leslie Martinez and writer Raquel Gutiérrez, author of Brown Neon (Coffee House Press, 2022). Moderated by Assistant Curator Elena Ketelsen González, the discussion will explore how Southwestern terrains, intergenerational dynamics, and queer futurities inform Martinez’s exhibition at PS1.

At 5:30 p.m., watch a screening of As Time Passes (2022) by local filmmaker Jamil McGinnis. Remixing home movies, 16mm footage, and appropriated film and video clips, the film traces linkages between the artist’s mother’s native Turkey and his home in Crown Heights. Presented by Shasha Movies, Alfreda’s Cinema, and MoMA PS1, the screening will be followed by a Q&A with Melissa Lyde, founder of Alfreda’s Cinema.

Throughout the day, pick up a copy of our new family activity guide created by the artists of Teen Art Salon, featuring drawing exercises inspired by our Artist Interventions. Stop by Homeroom to see Teen Art Salon: A Protospective and meet the artists.

PS1 will also be hosting a coat drive for asylum seekers in the local community. Drop off gently used cold-weather items such as coats, sweaters, gloves, hats, and thermal items of all sizes, from baby to adult, at the kiosk inside our main entrance. The coat drive will run from November 16 – 30 during regular museum hours.
