A Short Course on Resistance is an affirmative gesture to create a field of intertextuality that examines notions of resistance and education by recontextualizing the book club as a segment of an exhibition, inclusive of text, authors, contemporary art and philosophy. Curated by Peter Duhon, writer, educator and director of the contemporary art blog Art Comments.

Guido van der Werve presents his requiem for Nummer veertien, home, 2012 with the American Symphony Orchestra

As a prelude to composing this work, van der Werve mirrored the classical structure of a requiem in three movements by completing a 1,000-mile triathlon (swimming, biking and running) from Paris to Warsaw, retracing the path Frédéric Chopin’s heart travelled after his death. The symphony is an interwoven narrative indebted to the legacy of Alexander the Great, Chopin’s death and van der Werve’s personal history. It explores themes seen often in van der Werve’s work, namely physical endurance, the immensity of the natural world, the indelible links between history and geography, melancholy and the solitary—all contextualised within the scope of van der Werve’s surrealistic vision and wry humour.

Emerging out of the New York City House/Ballroom community, the Kiki scene is a highly organized and youth-led organization, which allows for an expression of the style and talent that epitomises many young people of colour currently navigating the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community in NYC. At the center of the underground Kiki scene are the Kiki balls, where the performers create unique looks related to a theme and compete for their Kiki house.

Artist Sara Jordenö and ballroom performer Twiggy Pucci Garçon host "The Movement Ball" with members of the Kiki Scene alongside a preview of their "in progress" documentary, Gesture. A celebration on the occasion of the opening of ARTBOOK @ MoMA PS1 Magazine Store in collaboration with Document Journal, and Faces NY, Inc. and Damiani, in what will be the first ever public presentation of this underground scene. Featuring projections by Assume Vivid Astro Focus.
