Artist's Statement
Lately, my work has shifted away from mimetic painting and toward a body of work where process, labor, and the indexical function of painting is emphasized. Starting with the “Leftover” series I began to see the canvas as a kind of obtuse recording device, onto which the conditions, materials and actions of a working space are revealed. The paintings describe & document a real situation. Though my paintings are generated by a series of refusals, they are simply a framework onto which many possibilities can be grafted. I would like to challenge the notions that abstraction today is inherently conservative, decorative and aloof from the world.
