Artist's Statement

Sue Burickson

The zeitgeist of our time is one of isolation and disconnection. We live in a state of separation but the details of this separation remain unexplored. My art is designed to visit this unexplored dimension and further this conversation. Expanding on traditional portraiture, Transmedia Portraits( sculpture with embedded video) is the best way I have found to further the conversation.

I have been a portrait painter of Civil War Reenactors for several years. During that time I became disillusioned with the capacity for 2d mediums to capture the true portrait of man which is manifest in both his inner and outer life. This current love affair with video/sculpture began about 2 years ago in response to a need to further this exploration and specifically to open up the mind/body conversation.
