I’m inspired by the scenes and movements of everyday life – morning on a city street, an autumn day in the countryside, a fresh bouquet of flowers placed on a table. The creative act begins with seeing the unique beauty in what is assumed to be ordinary. My work is an effort to discover and convey the beauty of everyday life.
Sonia Grineva was born in Moscow, Russia and received her B.A and M.F.A. degrees from the Stroganov Art Institute, Moscow’s leading art school, whose professors have included Kandinsky, Malevich, Rodchenko.
After coming to the United States , she studied at the National Academy of Design in Manhattan. She was awarded many high honors, including a coveted traveling scholarship to Florence, Italy, where she completed studies at the British Institute.
Sonia has since traveled extensively and in the tradition of many plein aire artists, works prodigiously on location. Her paintings have a spectral and geometric complexity which subtly conveys mood and sensation.
She maintains a studio in a historic Pen and Brush Club in New York City.
