Sheryl Oppenheim
My recent work has explored the idea that “Complicating things is easy, simplifying them is difficult” (Bruno Munari). My paintings are battlegrounds for communication between composition, color, and time. I believe strongly in the relationship between truth and beauty, and in losing control of my work in order to reveal the visual truths I am aware of but not quite able to clearly articulate. The work starts as a competition between spontaneous gestures and deliberately applied patterns; the antagonism of this struggle for space is the foundation of my paintings and drawings. Chaos and desperation give way to an arbitrary idea of beauty (as if such a thing exists), and then the work is finished.
