Serena Bocchino
iPOP
Created primarily using enamel paint and Bocchino’s method of “the pouring technique” developed this new series entitled iPOP. This series of paintings presented in an installation environment creates an atmosphere combining high art with popular culture. Using the garden setting as a launching pad combining ordinary lawn ornaments such as, bunnies, squirrels and flamingoes and transforming them into iconographic pop elements in her show iPOP. Since the inception of the pouring technique in 1999, Bocchino's pouring methodology is a necessity to express her poetics and visual vocabulary of rhythmic marks and lines and imagery resulting in a plethora of color, this time to grab our attention and to give us a new perspective. The philosophical contrast of combining high art of abstraction and ordinary lawn ornaments creates an exciting contrast that is provocative and humorous.
MoMA featured Bocchino working in her studio in a film documentary by Inversion Films. Bocchino and her work have been the subject of a total of four films, the most recent of which, A Dream of Blue, by Down the Line Productions, received the 2009 Best Inspirational Documentary Award by the NY International Independent Film & Video Festival.
