Artist's Statement

My work is a response to place. It is an exploration of the arid and barren landscape in which I was raised, and its particular ability to distill the experiences of space and light. I use a variety of media including wood, sandpaper, paper, stone, metal, pastel and acrylic paint, and typically build up my surfaces on raw or unprimed canvas. I choose materials for their inherent evocation of nature, and manipulate them only minimally, according to their flexibility or texture, allowing the materials themselves substantial artistic control. Foundational to my practice is finding a balance between the material’s physical characteristics and the need to translate the singular experience of place.
