Artist's Statement

Right now I feel influenced by Stravinsky's lectures which are available in the book The Poetics of Music and by Jean Renoir's ideas in the documentary, Jean Renoir; le patron: La Regle et l'exception (1966). Stravinsky: "The faculty of creating is never given to us all by itself. It always goes hand in hand with the gift of observation." And Renoir has helped me to let go of goals, set plans and anything definite.

Richard D Crawford returned to photography in 2003 at the insistence of his sons. Mostly, he photographs on the streets of New York City and the trails near his upstate cabin in West Hurley. During this winter he has been taking special effect shots of sticks and bushes and rock face in the Catskill snow, and prior to that, of kitchen items with eggs and pinto beans.
