I select images from the vast repository of stock photographs on the internet and reconstruct them. I isolate these spaces and recreate them in another material, allowing the aesthetically slight substitutions to appear about like what it is, and also a flimsier substitute of the original.
The images are often low-resolution, allowing me to insert fictions. In this process, the degradation of the image while simultaneously reasserting a material presence has a confounding affect: these photographs had functioned as semiotic markers and a way to obscure location.
The photographs and reconstructions are void of narrative detail or empathetic drama, creating a kind of aesthetic deprivation – a tension between landscapes of the constructed, the unbuilt and the demolished.
Rena Leinberger's work has been exhibited in solo shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Gallery 400 at University of Illinois of Chicago and Zg Gallery; she has been included in group exhibitions at the Queens Museum of Art, Bronx Museum of the Arts and CUE Art Foundation in New York, the Urban Institute of Contemporary Art, among others. She has been selected for several awards, including a fellowship in the Bronx Museum's AIM Program, a grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, and a residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York.
She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been reviewed in publications including Sculpture Magazine, FiberArts, Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Reader and the Brooklyn Rail.
