Randy Wray
In my paintings, trains, ships, and other modes of transportation become metaphors for the transformative power of art. Beginning with Currier & Ives lithographs as inspiration, I hand paint larger, altered versions depicting people in moments of transition and epiphany. The subjects leave behind the familiar world and rush into psychic mulch – passages of pure color and mark making. Areas of raw canvas and glitter assert the physicality of the paintings while simultaneously heightening the illusion of depth. By reinterpreting these pictures on a heroic scale, and incorporating abstraction, I aim to turn once sentimental pictures into new works of spirituality.
