Polly Shindler’s work is a composite of primitive forms, contemporary color and hand-drawn scrawl. Her body of work consists of animal and tribal-themed paintings and invented landscapes. She is creating new symbols, melding modern materials and imagined cultural markings. There is something archaic and supernatural that informs these paintings. Ritual objects such as beasts, talismen, weaponry and jewelry are used as influences and Shindler’s work memorializes and celebrates them. The paintings are done in layers of acrylic and scratched into to evoke a naïve, innocent hand. However, the colors communicate a modern sensibility and a nod to pop art.
Polly Shindler received her B.A. in History from The University of Massachusetts in 2001 and her M.F.A. in Painting at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY in 2011. Recent shows include “Aggro Crag” at BOSI Contemporary, “MsBehavior” at ArtBridge’s Drawing Room, and “Black Foliage” at Nudashank in Baltimore. Polly was named one of “30 Artists to Watch in 2012” by NY Arts Magazine. She resides in Brooklyn and has a studio in Bushwick.
