Artist's Statement

The form and image of Paul McHale's artwork establishes a text from which a viewer may contemplate meanings of sacred and secular, of transient and transcendent, and of signifier and signified. Delayed stories emerge and subtract the daily encounters to ferment tales of another place that are still here in the world. One finds hand writing on many of his paintings subtly just below the surface of the paint, which hint or sometimes explicitly demarcate what is going on in the thoughts of the characters. The use of images often seen in childhood create both a world young, familiar and distant.
