Artist's Statement

In Silkworks I created punk baroque sculptures made out of natural mulberry silk fibers and spray foam. Furthermore I also used other materials like velvet, leather straps , punk studs, barbeque skewers, stainless steel gags, abdominal retractors and other surgical items.
For creating this new body of work I have developed new sculptural methods. On the one hand I have developed a method of silk casting: casting silk sculptures out of silicon molds, preserving the natural properties of the silk. Furthermore, I also casted spray foam. I used small samples of spray foam shapes and spray foam bubbles to create a decorative baroque effect. One big advantage of spray foam is that it is very cheap so it is possible to make large architectural shapes inexpensively. This contrast between the cheap material and the decorative and luxury ornamentation adds a humorous and ironic element to the work.
