Artist's Statement

My work explores the relationship between surface tactility and gesture. As a graduate in architecture, my interest in construction and materiality has had a major influence in my paintings, including methods of applying material, choice in tools that apply it, and approach to the structures of surfaces. Each surface has inherent properties that influence how marks are perceived. By combining ground conditions with gesture, I leave contours and tactilities that begin each painting. My work places focus on the fundamental traits of my material, for example the direction of canvas grain, the layers of the paper, fabric that folds, pleats, and bunches. Whether this process induces figuration or a field of textures, the goal is to create a tactility that reflects an associational reading revealing a relationship between the structure, the hand, and the image.
