Artist's Statement

For several years I’ve focused on developing a body of work that would mirror aspects of everyday life while attending to the formal and conceptual relationships of abstraction and representation. My goal has been to further this dialogue in a contemporary context while offering new possibilities to viewers. This recent suite of oval panel paintings are executed on thick slabs of Mahogany, custom cut, shaped & sanded into unique forms that bevel neatly into the wall. Their surfaces are carefully painted with momentary scenes taken from life, in this case a woman reflecting with a glass of wine and several of her sewing, each superimposed abstractly, fragmenting and disrupting the initially calm interiors. Relying on chance as much as intent, this process of overpainting allows for the incidental to occur and disrupts any predictable sense of order, while mirroring some of the psychological aspects indicated in each of the portraits.
