Matthew Fisher
If these works at first appear obvious; it’s because they are. Dig past what you see and you might find a darker undercurrent. The reasoning for his dancing, could it be that the war is over – or just another battle? Did he survive to live another day? Does darkness bring safety or just forgetfulness? Or is his rollicking only because he had too much to drink? These are images of new lands and adventures. About inner struggles and outward forces. Portraits of individuals who are the end of the line. A cog in a larger machine, one that wears and grinds us from the top down, rarely the other way around.
