Laura Garcia Serventi
My work develops around the theatricality of the photographic medium, its relationship between truth and simulation and the concept of "mise en scene".
This series is called “ The Other Landscape” .
One part of the images are nudes and the other landscapes. In both cases the limits between real and unreal, natural and artificial, are blurred and confusing.
The ladscapes are not real landscapes, but details of big dioramas found in many Natural History Museums.
The women were photographed quoting the poses of famous paintings in front of an exuberant and exotic painted vegetation. The women look natural and relaxed… however, all of them had had some kind of cosmetic plastic surgery in the past. Both the landscape and the body are intervened. The images are staged in one way or another, they are a metaphor of our aim to change and control the Natural World.
Laura Garcia Serventi was born and raised in Argentina. She received her degree in Painting from the School of Fine Arts Prilidiano Pueyrredon in Buenos Aires. During the last years of Art School she started experimenting with Photography and became deeply interested in the medium. This made her decide to move to Italy to continue her art education in Photography at the Fondazione Studio Marangoni. She lived in Italy for five years and in 2006 moved to New York, where she lives and works now.
