Keren Benbenisty
My work challenges the mutual exclusivity of Romanticisms and Conceptualism. Using drawing, Video, and Installation, I create “contemporary relics” that straddle the contradiction between the contemporary culture and the archaic. Through minimal and economic gestures, I document objects, ephemeral materials and texts coming from the ordinary and banal, the everyday.
Coming from a current western context, there is a significant correspondent with my oriental Middle Eastern origins. I am intrigued by the definition of the Levant, an old word with new meaning; A land of ancient civilization, which is today, not exclusively western or eastern, and defined as postmodern, carries in it the concept of hybridization that inspires my perception of cyclical time – linking present to an ancient past.
