Artist's Statement

Kelly McCafferty clusters small insignificant things together—candy wrappers, ticket stubs, tokens, lotto scratch-offs, buttons, stickers, stamps, cards, bits of string, etc. These are the kinds of things she pulls out of her pockets at the end of the day. These are the things she picks up on the street, the things people give to her, the things she saves, the things she keeps.

Kelly McCafferty (b. 1980) lives in Brooklyn and works in Queens. She was raised on a thoroughbred horse farm in Kentucky. She graduated with her MFA from Pratt Institute with a concentration in sculpture in 2012. She received a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2004. She also received a BA from Hampshire College in 2003 where she studied encaustic painting, women's studies and ancient religion. Her exhibition, Good Luck, was shown at Freight + Volume in July 2012. She has attended artist residencies at Atlantic Center for the Arts, The Vermont Studio Center and Contemporary Artist Center at Woodside. She collects metal lunchboxes, records, chalkware, postcards, floaty pens, PEZ, snow globes, magnets, minerals, books, dollhouses + more.
