Katharine Dufault
The new work is a series of variations on the spiral. The spiral is a primary form found frequently in nature – shells, ferns, tornadoes and galaxies - the repetitive form of fractal design. The spiral is present in ancient cultures, eastern and western. It appears everywhere in the arts of medicine, architecture and mathematics. I find the spiral both intriguing and satisfying: it has apparent simplicity yet its proportions are strictly calculated. In the new work, the spiral pattern is repeated, opened up and sometimes fragmented. A line of thread wanders through the chambers of some of the Jute and encaustic create a sensual tactile surface. These natural substances echo the subject of the composition. Heavy physicality is balanced with a neutral palette of milky whites and umbers.
