Katharine Betty Jones
I make medium sized paintings for people to hang on walls because I think that this is something that is needed right now. There are a lot of walls. Artwork hanging on these walls exists in between our acts. I want to create paintings that suggest alternate worlds with their own precise perspectives, light sources, and logics. I want to create alternate worlds where beauty and pleasure is enhanced by lack and difference.
Depictions of depth, mass, and space are riddled with culture. Like Manet’s pastiche, or an exercise in Surrealism, I collect, rearrange, and render images. Some of my paintings are based on the photographic lens, while some take the form of traditional genre painting: portraits and landscapes. These forms shape my paintings because they are the frames through which I perceive and have learned to perceive the world.
