Artist's Statement

Josh M. G. Yates (b. 1989) is a British interdisciplinary artist living and working in New York City. In his work, Josh layers traditional and digital media utilizing canvas, paper, objects and video. He sources material from television, film, advertising, politics, and art historical canon. What often emerges is an anxiety-ridden relationship with institutions, public platforms, and the position of art in the twenty-first century.

His most recent project is an installation entitled 'Ritual'. It is an installation that explores ideas of engagement between artist and viewer, wherein a ritualized performance by the artist is documented and exhibited as displayed objects. On a pedestal under glass, is a 3D printed raised etched red plastic sphere. On a shelf, an old Gaf View-Master from the early 1980s rests. Viewers are invited to pick up the View-Master to engage its contents.
