Artist's Statement

Sometimes it takes me a while to get past the confluence of images surrounding me from computer screens, TV, film, iphone or the assaultive environment of New York where I live and work. Statements by artists I admire make it easier to confront and do my paintings such as from Degas, “Make a drawing, begin it again, trace it; begin it again and trace it again” or from Jasper Johns, “Do something, do something to that, and then do something to that.” It tells me the difficulties in making art has a long history going back to the cave paintings. I avoid a comfort zone going over and over revising or creating another variation until I am left with a challenging result because to me painting is what I need to do not just what I want to do.
