Hilary Basing
Born in Kalamazoo, MI in 1979. Currently lives and works in Brooklyn. BFA from Pratt Institute 2002. Published in Abe's Penny Magazine April 2010. Shown at Charlie Horse Gallery, Scope Hamptons, Nurture Art, Sarah Bowen Gallery, Naked Duck Gallery, and Brooklyn Academy of Music among others. August 2009 residency at Vermont Studio Center.
My work in photography and video aims to trivialize the distinctions between male and female, examine the polarities of time and place, and employ nostalgia as a stylistic element through a variety of androgynous characters. By working in video or using an entire role of film to create a single photo, my work is naturally expressed in a linear format and shows progressive action over time. My muses range from aerobic goddesses, singers and performers, talk show hosts, and activists and include Jane Fonda, Tyra Banks, Oprah Winfrey and Richard Butler.
