Gabriela Alva Cal y Mayor
My work often focuses in objects and words. Objects; as a material thing, objects of content, as a purpose. An object is something more immediate. Words and objects travel so far depending on how well we know how to use them. I like to take words, phrases, and sentences and turn them around, ask and wonder why do we use them as much? It is through translation both as meaning, shape and appearance that I find myself constantly working.
In my current work, I am drawn to the language of the un-functional, through sculpture and printmaking, I build
landscapes, seeking to interpret the process of time and man-made consequence. I recreate the composition of objects set aside, read into color codes found in urban settings and follow the natural course of aging materials.
