Artist's Statement

Guided by raw intuition, I explore the effect of hue, tone, line and brushwork. By eliminating peripheral details and narrative, I depict a non-specific interior or exterior place. Color and brushwork lend a sense of mood and dynamism to each work. This results in paintings that are abstractions of vacant landscapes or empty rooms. All the paintings are meditative by virtue of the effect on the viewer who is invited to join in the contemplation of a place that is unknowable because it is devoid of details. By stripping away pictorial devices that define meaning, this work leaves the viewer to find his/her own meaning by focusing within. As such, each painting becomes a meditation space--a place to observe the ebb and flow of personal associations. These works invite the viewer to grapple with solitude and ambiguity.
