Artist's Statement

My paintings depict an exotic place that is simultaneously growing and decomposing. These places become swamps or frozen gardens populated by implied figures and architecture that play out a visual drama between a deep and collapsed space. Plant-life figures and anatomical armatures grow and melt into each other, freezing and thawing again. There is an unfamiliar quality to these landscapes as if the viewer is discovering a place for the first time, like Lewis and Clarke. There is a hide and seek element in these paintings that is reminiscent of putting a puzzle together. Multiple eye levels convey a sense of background spilling into foreground. The familiar landscape has been undone and sewn back together to create a Frankenstein terrain.
