Artist's Statement

Violent images appear as something altogether different in my paintings. A dead man can be a man asleep; a solitary naked figure is both confident and strangely vulnerable. Horror mixes with the mundane and comical. I paint parts of bodies in isolation – headless torsos, hands reaching towards a face, bodies lying side by side. Using ideas from current news, I appropriate compositions from films- mostly horror and surrealist drama- to transport these political stories into a more dreamlike and playful scape. Other than planes of color and shadowy brushstrokes, the surroundings remain undefined, negating any reality or related clues. The subjects exist in an emotional rather than physical space, out of joint and adrift in unpunctuated time.
