Artist's Statement

From the moment I set foot on the island of Manhattan, the city has been a major source of inspiration and the connecting thread throughout most of my artistic practice.
Two current projects, shown here, are collaged-based mixed media works:
“CitySquares” focuses on the myriad architectural styles evident on each city street. The square format allows me to enhance the abstract nature of these sources by inverting and juxtaposing elements to create a multi-directional piece – an influence from my days as a textile designer.
“Otherwise Engaged”, a continuing series since 2009, are weekly collages made on the reproductions inside the Metropolitan Museum Engagement Book that visually record my day-to-day travels. Since the criterion for me is that these elements be acquired, created or found during the corresponding week, these collages are, in essence, a visual diary.
