Artist's Statement

I have painted many different subjects and the ones I find most compelling are usually close at hand—more often than not, figures, still lifes, and interiors. I have always been fascinated by the potential for mystery in the translation of the everyday. My sources of inspiration are as far-flung as a moment in an El Greco painting, a yearbook photo, and the dunes I saw as a child. I love lusciousness in paint and, moreover, the history of painting. I have an undying fascination with things and the ambiguity that arises in their depiction.

In all my work there is a surreal-ness attained through embellishment, editing, or omission. My project is to explain things, however inconsequential, in a way that conveys more than what they may seem to be.
