Chris Spinelli
My work is an ageist corruption of the online video favorite—a teenager alone in his or her bedroom, camera as witness, venting and doing strange shit. Standing in for the identity-starved adolescent is a middle-aged man, in “a room of his own”, doing nothing as something. His immediate surroundings doubling as his set, he performs another take on the multiplicity of self.
Chris Spinelli is a Brooklyn based artist, working in a variety of media, from painting and printmaking to video and sculpture. Born in New York City and raised on Long Island, he holds a BA in Art History from Oberlin College in Ohio and an MFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In 2005 he was a Joan Mitchell Foundation Award nominee. His work has been shown at Outfest, MIX, the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, documenta 12, Spark Contemporary Art Space and the Yerba Center for the Arts. His writing has appeared in Whitewall and NY Arts.
