Catherine Lan
I utilize fashion elements to explore themes of female identity, fantasy and desire. The recent fairy-tale series use faux fur as traditional canvas, appropriating subjects from classical Western and Oriental stories. I cut and shave the fur, then fill the gaps with poured paint. The materials reflect contemporary Asian pop culture that is derived from surface and appearance. The juxtaposition of these candy colored materials and colors become a relief-painting. In today's world of industrialization and flow of interactions, our most intimate personal desires and fantasies are perhaps merely adaptations, reoccurrences of the same story, sometimes Baroque, sometimes Disney, always prefabricated.
