Caroline Burghardt
My work is about a sense of longing, a yearning for connection. This series is about our disconnection from the natural world and the awkwardness that arises from this distance.
We commune with the natural environment, often with goal of finding tranquility and (re)connecting to ourselves as sentient beings. Nature, viewed as pristine and lovely, is often seen as something we have lost touch with as intellective beings. In interacting with the natural world we seek, fleetingly, to release from our thoughts and reclaim our inner realm. These associations with nature are also evident in the natural motifs in the fabrics and decorations that we use to adorn ourselves and our living spaces. I am interested in the mirroring of the interior and exterior spaces, both mental and physical, of the people and places in the images.
Caroline Burghardt has exhibited her work in numerous group and solo shows nationally at including: Luhring Augustine, NY; Hudson Franklin, NY; A.I.R. Gallery, NY; Center for Visual Arts, Toledo, OH; Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, Grand Rapids, MI; The Minnesota Center for Photography, Minneapolis, MN; and Southern Exposure, San Francisco, CA. She is a founding member of the Brooklyn based Round Robin Collective and co-organized the exhibition "Ecstatic" at Saint Cecilia’s convent in Brooklyn this past March.
