Candice Chu
As a painter, it is my aim to interrogate reality and generate dialogue through interesting visual combinations. Within my work, I often turn to gendered visual codes to portray delicacy and strength; my use of domestic objects, interior spaces, and architecture structure my paintings to convey a framework of gendered relationships as seen through space and domestic life.
My use of domestic objects, interior spaces, architecture, and symbols of the feminine is strongly
linked to my study of late nineteenth century European painting. However, I am also interested in signs and symbols of the female and how the depictions of women change over time.
Candice showed a painting and drawing installations at the "Never Ending Skaga", a group show of artists from New York, Berlin, and Ireland. The exhibit opened at the Mjólkurbúðin Gallery in Akureyri, Iceland, on the 28th of May, 2011. The show was curated by Shane Finan from Sligo, Ireland.
