Ari Richter
My work embodies the principle, “Waste not, want not.” I salvage materials from the waste can, and make things that few people want. I think of humor and anxiety as opposite sides of the same coin. Unfortunately for me, this currency has a terrible exchange rate. I’ve been told that my practice is self-absorbed and vainglorious. Incidentally, vainglorious is a nickname I gave to my penis. My family is the root of all my anxieties. Sit-in on their Passover Seder and you’ll know about affliction. When I was a child I obsessively drew comic books. My super heroes would murder each other using their bodily powers of piss, shit and vomit. My parents were both therapists, so this was a healthy expression of creativity. With my art, I strive to be more like a child. On an average day in the studio I throw a tantrum, soil my pants and nap for the rest of the afternoon.
