Angela Washko
Through an interdisciplinary practice spanning performance, video, and installation, Angela Washko investigates the effects of consumerism and materialism in creating the foundations of American lifestyle. In her most recent work, Washko satirically utilizes imagery reminiscent of the French Rococo to question the era’s notion of beauty achieved through the excessive accumulation of frivolous objects and draws parallels to American society’s limited depiction of women and sex-driven marketing tactics. A backlash against planned obsolescence, her film sets and installations are constructed with items recovered from dumpsters and Dollar-Store materials marketed as disposable.
