Artist's Statement
I use humor, beauty and a sense of the bizarre to give each work a point of entry - leaving open ends which a viewer can connect if they choose. A flat, red semicircle can dumbly represent a smile, and a few washy strokes may stand for a nose and eyes. Each mark uniquely shapes the viewer’s subjectivity. It is a challenge to maintain openness in portraiture, as the brain is programmed to recognize a certain formation of shapes as a face. This innate tool for basic communication is hard to transcend. The narrow space where human intelligence moves between instinct and objectivity is my space of play. www.gowanusstudio.org/angelaconant
