September 13: Jonathan Horowitz and Alex Kitnick in Conversation
Sunday, September 13, 2009
3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
As the concluding event for the Jonathan Horowitz’s solo exhibition And/Or, the artist and art historian Alex Kitnick will tour the show, discussing certain themes and concerns fundamental to his practice. In addition to the presentation, Horowitz will present his 2009 video Apocalypto Now, which is modeled after a documentary about Hollywood diaster movies. It makes links between real life and fictional catastrophes as well as the apocalyptic beliefs of religious fundamentalists.
Working in video, sculpture, sound installation, and photography, Jonathan Horowitz critically examines the cultures of politics, celebrity, cinema, war, and consumerism. Utilizing found footage, Horowitz visually and spatially juxtaposes elements from film, television, and the media to reveal connections and breakdowns between these overlapping modes of communication. In many works, these concerns are couched in the language of technology.
